Description: The essay is divided into seven parts and each part is preceded by an epigraph. Comment: It is interesting to note that this is the first of Rukeyser’s contributions to Life and Letters Today. In the same issue we find an essay by Thomas Mann on “Freud and the Future”, a poem by Horace Gregory, a section of Ignazio Silone’s Bread and Wine and reviews of books by Bryher. In the “Notes on Contributors” she is presented as follows: ”Muriel Rukeyser, who was born in 1913, is author of the well-received Theory of Flight, a first selection of verse published in the Yale Series of Younger Poets. We took occasion of her visiting England to enrol her as contributor and are happy to be introducing in December several of her newest poems to our readers”. As a matter of fact, three of her poems appeared in the Winter issue of Life and Letters Today, as promised. Another ‘politically’ meaningful poem – “Elegy” - was published in Vol. 21, No. 19 (1939).
