Comment: In a unpublished typewritten and handwritten letter dated September, 27, 1912 Mary Gawthorpe argues that hunger-strike must be a means to an end, not a weapon of war. Gawthorpe's view on the use of the hunger-strike reflects her definition of the militant suffragist: not a rebel (as Dora Marsden thought she should be) but a "rebel under protest", as she defined militant women in June 1912 in a letter to The Freewoman.
