Comment: Life and Letters was started in 1928 by Desmond MacCarthy, known as critic of literature and cinema, as editor of New Quarterly and as literary editor of New Statesman. Life and Letters reflected MacCarthy’s tastes and personal ties and mainly published prominent British writers, especially figures of the Bloomsbury set. In 1934 the magazine went through a difficult period due to financial problems. From spring 1934 until spring 1935 Life and Letters was directed first by Hamish Miles and later by R. Ellis Roberts. In 1935, with the financial support of Bryher, Life and Letters became Life and Letters To-Day under the joint editorship of Petrie Townshend and Robert Herring. Herring had already been associated with the magazine Close-Up, that also benefited from Bryher’s support and contributions. In their first editorial (see [:229; 229:]
) Townshend and Herring announced the magazine’s new interests: young writers, living literature and international culture.
