Comment: When reading this letter, one cannot help thinking of the literary journal Con Spirito that Bishop had founded together with Muriel Rukeyser and Mary Mc Carthy, when they were at Vassar College, and of the first short stories that Bishop published in the same periodical, in the Vassar Review, and in the Vassar Journal of Undergraduate Studies. The references that Bishop makes to Horace Gregory, to Marianne Moore, to New Theatre, to Life and Letters Today - that is to Bryher – to Direction, etc. confirm that the literary web of the period, connecting the United States and Europe, is quite intricate and intriguing. The book Bishop refers to, in this letter, is Theory of Flight, that Rukeyser had just published (see record [:485;485:]
). Some of the poems collected in that volume had already appeared in New Masses (see record [:468;468:]
), Partisan Review, Con Spirito, Vassar Review, Housatonic (see record [:466;466:]
), Poetry, Westminster Review, etc.
