Comment: This letter, undated, was certainly written in 1933, when Rock and Shell was issued. Against all the odds, it was reviewed favorably in numerous publications. Horace Gregory called Wheelwright “one of the few matured poets in our time”, characterizing the book as “an epilogue to the tradition of New England culture”; Rukeyser wrote in the New Masses that the book “outlines the development of a poet passing from religious preoccupation to activity in the revolutionary movement” (120). |
