Comment: Two references help dating this letter between the end of 1938 and the beginning of 1939. U.S. 1, Rukeyser’s second volume of poetry, dedicated to Gregory, was published in 1938; Madrid fell on March 28, 1939, when the nationalist troops entered the city after two-and-a-half years of siege.
