Comment: As soon as Rukeyser sent Robert Herring her “piece” on the Spanish War - “Barcelona, 1936” (see record [:54;54:] ) - not only did he express his admiration and gratitude, but showed he was concerned about her emotional response to that event («you must be feeling a bit of a reaction»; «it must have done a few things»). Between the two final words («Best luck») and his signature, Herring drew a fist – a very simple and naive sketch - with the same pen and ink he had used for the entire letter. Although undated, this epistle was surely written in August 1936. |
