La ricerca dell’unità romana vuole riallacciarsi e completare la grande messe di ricerca portata avanti nel biennio precedente sul tema del rapporto tra Europa ed America nell’ambito dei ‘luoghi’ deputati ad esplorare e affermare, nei primi decenni del secolo, alcuni filoni essenziali della cultura del Novecento: dal modernismo al femminismo, dal pacifismo ai grandi temi politici del secolo che iniziava. Oltre a contribuire al sito nazionale, l'unità ha anche creato un proprio sito web di raccolta dati e di scambio (“Dal frammento alla rete”) che conta oltre 1500 schede. I contributi a stampa e l’ingente patrimonio raccolto nei due siti sono l’essenziale base di partenza scientifica da cui parte l’attuale ricerca che si conferma come squisitamente interdisciplinare, annoverando storici e letterati ed occupandosi di diversi settori artistici e tendenze politico-sociali.
I ‘luoghi’ ora privilegiati sono alcuni salotti (precipuamente quelli parigini di Stein e Barney), alcune importanti gallerie artistiche (come quella di Alfred Stieglitz a New York e le più rilevanti gallerie di Berlino e Monaco), giornali e riviste, raccolte spesso inedite di materiale propagandistico, e la scena teatrale londinese.
Poesia, prosa, arti visive e immagini varie (dalla fotografia al poster), rappresentazioni teatrali, continuano ad essere il materiale di uno studio in cui la ricerca d’identità personale, di genere, nazionale, culturale e il multilinguismo che ad essa è direttamente collegato hanno rappresentato e rappresentano assi portanti.

La possibilità di rapportare tutto ciò organicamente ai rapporti Europa-America aggiunge una particolare profondità alla ricostruzione storico-culturale in un quadro internazionale largamente percorso e attraversato dal tema del moderno.

The research of the Rome unit will continue to develop and consolidate the results of work carried out in the previous two years on the subject of European-American relationships. Relationships that were created in and between places and spaces that, at the beginning of the 20th century, were devoted to exploring and defining some essential lines of twentieth-century culture: from modernism to feminism, from pacifism to the great political and social issues of the first decades of the century.

The unit has contributed to the national website, but has also created its own website (“From Fragment to Web”), now holding over 1500 records. Continuation, completion and implementation of the two websites are the first goals of the second stage of the research, as well as presenting, along with published work, the theoretical basis by which the work in the

coming two years will be guided. The Roman unit will affirm its specifically interdisciplinary composition and approach, and its interest in a number of different artistic areas and products, along with a focus on various socio-political issues. The privileged ‘places’ and ‘spaces’ will still be two Paris salons, some important galleries in Berlin and Munich together with the well-known Stieglitz gallery in New York, magazines, correspondence and the London theatrical scene. Poetry, visual arts, images of various kinds – from photography to posters – and performances will still constitute the basic material for studying the explorations in identity (gendered and national, cultural and personal), and the plurilinguism directly related to those efforts, the latter being one of the red threads through which the historical and cultural reconstruction of the period will take place.
