Comment: Both the opposition of nationalism and internationalism, and the relation between literature and real world are central issues in the arguments of the editors of Life and Letters To-day. In the editorial of the issue of Autumn 1936 Herring and Townshend comment the discussion that took place in London during the Second Congress of the International Association of Writers in June 1936, and openly take side against a world of nations each one closed in its own nationalism. The editors, that meant to keep the magazine non-political, express instead their opinions on the latest international and political events, as they deem that the civil war broken out in Spain demands a comment and that credit must be given to the courage of the Spanish people. Internationalism from this editorial on will be associated to a politics of openness, to democracy, to anti-nazi-fascim. |
